TIMESINDONESIA, MANADO – Nestled in the cool, mountainous region of Tomohon, North Sulawesi, lies Danau Linow (Linow Lake), a volcanic lake that captivates visitors with its unique feature: water that constantly shifts in color from green to blue to brownish. The ever-changing hues of Linow Lake symbolize a rare harmony between nature, geology, and human life.
The journey to Linow Lake takes approximately one hour from Manado City, passing through vast green hills framed by the majestic Mount Lokon and Mount Mahawu. Upon arrival, visitors are immediately greeted by the cool mountain air combined with the distinct aroma of sulfur, characteristic of this volcanic area. Hydrothermal activity at the lake’s bottom causes the water’s color to continuously change, appearing as a living geological marvel.
Linow Lake offers a dual appeal: stunning natural beauty and renewable energy potential. Visitors can not only enjoy the scenery but also learn about the lake’s formation process and the geothermal energy utilization in the surrounding area.
The Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) Units 1–4 stands nearby, providing a source of environmentally friendly energy for the residents of Tomohon and the surrounding region. This combination makes a visit, such as the educational tour taken by participants of IPEC 2, more than just recreation but also a means of environmental education.
While the lake's high sulfur content makes swimming unsafe, visitors can take leisurely walks along the shore or relax in a gazebo while enjoying the panorama. Several spots also offer beautiful photo opportunities, with the backdrop of the imposing Mount Lokon.
Close to the main location, a number of accommodations and resorts enhance the tourist experience. For example, d’Linow Resort features a café with a direct view of the lake, complete with acoustic music and aesthetic photo spots. Green Lake Bungalow offers the sensation of touring the lake using a canoe, while Santi Linow (Hidden Gem) is a favorite choice for enjoying the sunset amid expansive flower gardens.
"Information about geothermal energy and conservation in this area was a new experience for us. Natural beauty can, in fact, go hand-in-hand with sustainability," said Muhammad Fajri Hardiyanto, a participant in the IPEC 2 educational tour from the State Polytechnic of Malang, during his visit to the beautiful volcanic lake on September 17, 2025.
